The Subject Way

Our subject has a ‘Subject Way’ at the heart of it. Our Subject Way is designed to help students become young subject specialists. The Subject Way has two main purposes:

Firstly, to teach students the vital skills they need to achieve their full potential and gain the very best grades they can. Secondly, to teach students how each subject relates to the wider world, incorporating the life skills they will learn.

It is our belief that knowing how what you learn links to the wider world brings a subject to life and therefore improves overall understanding and engagement.

Curriculum Overview

BTEC Acting consists of 3 components and if you are successful you will be awarded a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

The award is equivalent to one GCSE at A*-C. However, if Level 2 is not reached a Level 1 P may be awarded.
Work is assessed through internal and external assessment and students will be required to complete written coursework tasks throughout, building a portfolio as evidence of your achievements on the BTEC course.

The 3 Components are; Exploring the Performing Arts, Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts and Responding to a Brief.
  • Component 1: Exploring the Performing Arts allows students to practically tackle 3 theatre genres or plays where exploration is taught through workshops and in the written portfolio. Previous examples include Pantomime, Everybody’s Talking about Jamie, I Love you Mum; I Promise I won’t die, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttimeand Blood Brothers. There will also be the opportunity to visit the theatre at least once during this time.
  • Component 2: Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts is the performance element of the course. Students will participate in skills workshops to extend their learning and understanding of preparing for performance, and will then rehearse and finally perform a scripted section from a play, either in a monologue, duologue or group piece.
  • Component 3: Responding to a Brief is the external part of the course and the culmination and celebration of everything that has been learnt over the 2 year course where students devise a piece of theatre based on a set brief from the exam board.
